Peter Wiley — Cello

Peter Wiley has enjoyed a distinguished career as cellist, chamber musician, and teacher. He entered the Curtis Institute of Music at age 13, studying with David Soyer. At just 20 years old, Wiley was appointed Principal Cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, following a year with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

A recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Wiley has earned Grammy Award nominations with both the Beaux Arts Trio (1998) and the Guarneri String Quartet (2009). During his tenure with the Beaux Arts Trio, he performed in over a thousand concerts worldwide with many of the world’s leading orchestras. From 2001 until its retirement in 2009, Wiley succeeded his teacher David Soyer as cellist of the Guarneri Quartet. He is also a founding member of the Opus One Piano Quartet.

Wiley’s longstanding relationship with the Marlboro Music Festival, which began in 1971, continues to this day. He has also been a faculty artist at Caramoor’s Rising Stars program and has taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Mannes College of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. He currently serves on the faculties of both the Curtis Institute of Music and the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

Wiley performs on a rare Venetian cello by Matteo Goffriller.
