Pianist Haochen Zhang, who won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of 19 and has been described as “an artist of rare talent” by Gramophone, gives a solo recital featuring two emotional piano sonatas: Schumann’s first, a deeply personal work that the composer dedicated to his future wife, Clara Wieck, and Beethoven’s next-to-last, which the French composer Vincent d’Indy described as “an exertion of will to banish suffering.”

BEETHOVEN Sonata in A-flat Major, Op. 110 (1821)

SCHUMANN Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op. 11 (1833-35)
