Edward Soluri — Bassoon
Edward Soluri became principal bassoonist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2015, after serving for 11 years with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and nine seasons with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist in works by Mozart, Weber, Ferdinand David, Richard Strauss, Michael Daugherty, Jurien Andriessen, and in 2014 performed the co-commissioned Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra by Marc Neikrug with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra.
His artistry has been described as “elegant, pleasant play, a celebration of the instrument’s possibilities” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). He has also been featured at multiple International Double Reed Society (IDRS) conferences, performing programs that expand the bassoon’s repertoire by incorporating works originally written for voice, including opera arias and songs by Puccini, Donizetti, Mahler, and Rachmaninoff.
A frequent guest artist, Soluri has performed with ensembles such as the Cleveland Orchestra, Grant Park Orchestra, Columbus Symphony, Alabama Symphony, and toured with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Carnegie Hall, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. He has also been a regular at leading summer festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra, National Orchestral Institute, Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.
Soluri is also a committed educator. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and he has given master classes at institutions such as the Florida State University, Eastman School of Music, Ball State University, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Lawrence University, and the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp.
A native of Florida, Soluri holds degrees from Florida State University (B.M.) and the Cleveland Institute of Music (M.M.), where his teachers included John Hunt, Jeffrey Keesecker, and David McGill. He credits soprano Maria Callas as one of his greatest artistic inspirations. Soluri performs on Fox bassoons and is a proud Fox Artist.
