Peter Stumpf — Cello

Peter Stumpf is Professor of Cello at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and former Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His tenure in Los Angeles followed 12 years as Associate Principal Cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He began his professional orchestral career at age 16 with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Stumpf studied at the Curtis Institute of Music (B.M.) and earned an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory.

A dedicated chamber musician, Stumpf is a member of the Johannes String Quartet and has appeared in series at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Boston Celebrity Series, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Tokyo’s Casals Hall, and major venues in Cologne. He has performed with the Chamber Music Societies of Boston and Philadelphia and at festivals including Marlboro, Santa Fe, Bridgehampton, Ottawa, Great Lakes, Ojai, Spoleto, Aspen, and Music from Marlboro. His collaborators include pianists Leif Ove Andsnes, Emanuel Ax, Jorge Bolet, Yefim Bronfman, Radu Lupu, András Schiff, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Mitsuko Uchida, and quartets including the Emerson and Guarneri. With the Johannes Quartet, he has toured in collaboration with the Guarneri Quartet, performing commissioned works by William Bolcom and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

As a soloist, Stumpf has appeared with the Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, Vermont Symphony, Connecticut String Orchestra, and others. Recital highlights include Jordan Hall in Boston, the Philips and Corcoran Galleries in Washington, D.C., and universities across the U.S. He has also presented complete cycles of J.S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. His honors include first prize in the Washington International Competition, the Graham-Stahl Competition, and the Aspen Concerto Competition, as well as second prize in the Evian International String Quartet Competition.

Stumpf is also recognized for his work in contemporary music, having been a member of Boston Musica Viva and premiered numerous works, including microtonal compositions. His teaching career includes faculty positions at USC, Hartt School of Music, New England Conservatory, Curtis Institute of Music, Yellow Barn, and the Musicorda Summer String Program. He has conducted master classes at institutions worldwide, including the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Seoul National University, Manhattan and Mannes Schools of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and universities across North America.
