Michael Chavez
Percussion
Michael Chavez is a dynamic drummer and devoted teacher who believes in the transformative power of music education. A proud alumnus of the University of New Mexico, Michael studied music performance and developed the artistic foundation that shaped his professional career.
From 1998 to 2011, Michael toured internationally as the drummer and percussionist for Grammy-nominated guitarist Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra, performing for audiences around the world and recording on several acclaimed projects. He continues to record and perform nationally and internationally as a professional musician, bringing passion, versatility, and musical excellence to every stage.
In addition to his performance career, Michael is a dedicated educator committed to inspiring the next generation of musicians. He currently serves as the Percussion Director at St. Michael’s High School and, for the last four years, has been the Percussion Caption Head for the Santa Fe High School Marching Band. Michael also volunteers as the percussion assistant for the New Mexico All-State Concert Orchestra, supporting young percussionists as they pursue excellence at the highest level.
Michael has developed a teaching style rooted in discipline, creativity, and connection, empowering students to grow not only as musicians but as confident individuals and leaders. Beyond technique and performance, he emphasizes teamwork, confidence, and personal growth, creating a motivating and inclusive learning environment. His mission is to share his love for rhythm, performance, and lifelong learning while helping students discover their own creative potential.
