Meng Su — Guitar
Meng Su is a multifaceted guitarist celebrated for her stunning virtuosity and refined artistry. New York Concert Review praised her playing as “seemingly effortless and stunningly polished … poised to be in high demand,” while Classical Guitar Magazine has noted that “she has already reached the status of a seasoned artist.”
In addition to her flourishing solo career, Su is an avid chamber musician who tours internationally with the Beijing Guitar Duo and as a soloist with orchestras. She has performed in more than 30 countries at distinguished venues including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. In 2023, she created and premiered “Spanish Fantasia” in Shanghai, the first-ever multimedia guitar theater production, which reimagines the future of classical performance.
Her recordings have earned both public acclaim and critical recognition. Her debut duo CD Maracaípe received a Latin Grammy nomination for the title track by Sergio Assad, while Bach to Tan Dun included the world-premiere recording of Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolor. With Manuel Barrueco and the Beijing Guitar Duo, she recorded China West (2014), and her debut solo album Meng (2016) was hailed as “awe-inspiring” and “this year’s finest debut by far” by Classical Guitar Magazine.
Born in Qingdao, China, Su began guitar studies at age five with Prof. Chen Zhi at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. She has won numerous international competitions, most recently the prestigious 2015 Parkening International Guitar Competition. She went on to earn an Artist Diploma, Master’s Degree, and Graduate Diploma in Chamber Music under Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.
Today, Meng Su teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and serves as Artist-in-Residence for the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society.
