Lucas Meachem — Baritone
Grammy® Award-winning baritone Lucas Meachem, hailed as a “rock star of opera” (Opera Pulse), is celebrated worldwide for his mastery of a vast repertoire of leading roles as well as his dedication to creating new ones. Lauded by Seen and Heard International for his “exceptionally compelling” artistry and praised by The New York Times for his “earnest, appealing baritone,” Meachem combines musical mastery with genuine warmth and charisma, captivating audiences across the globe.
In the 2024/2025 season, Meachem begins with a featured recital alongside his wife, pianist Irina Meachem, at The Kennedy Center, presented by Vocal Arts DC. He then stars as Count di Luna in Houston Grand Opera’s Il trovatore, before returning to Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu for appearances as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Giorgio Germont in La traviata. Additional highlights include Lucia di Lammermoor at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, conducted by Daniel Oren; the world premiere of Francesco Filidei’s Il Nome Della Rosa at Teatro alla Scala, where Meachem performs the lead role of Guglielmo da Baskerville under Ingo Metzmacher; and a summer engagement as Marcello in San Francisco Opera’s La bohème.
Recent triumphs include his “heroic performance” (Opera Magazine) as Jean-Dominique Bauby in the world premiere of Joby Talbot’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly at The Dallas Opera, as well as celebrated turns as Don Giovanni with Los Angeles Opera, Michele and Gianni Schicchi in Il Trittico at the Staatsoper Hamburg, and Elijah with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also appeared as soloist in Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and hosted free public masterclasses in Los Angeles and New York, mentoring the next generation of singers.
A frequent guest at the world’s leading opera houses, Meachem has performed signature roles including Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera House, Den Norske Opera, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera), Don Giovanni (Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, Dresden Semperoper, Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera), and Athanaël in Thaïs (Teatro alla Scala, Minnesota Opera). He has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in roles ranging from Marcello (La bohème) to Mercutio (Roméo et Juliette), and has been praised for his portrayals of Nabucco (Oper im Steinbruch), Wolfram (Tannhäuser) with Seiji Ozawa at the Saito Kinen Festival, and Eugene Onegin (Opéra national de Montpellier, Komische Oper Berlin).
In 2016, he earned a Grammy® Award for his performance as Figaro in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with Los Angeles Opera, conducted by James Conlon. His first solo album, Shall We Gather (Rubicon Records), featuring American songs with Irina Meachem at the piano, was praised by BBC Music Magazine for its “vibrant and committed performances” and described by The New Yorker as “a plea for togetherness in a divided country.”
During the pandemic, Meachem became a pioneer of digital performance. On March 23, 2020, he and his wife live-streamed a recital from Dallas’s Winspear Opera House—just days after lockdown—which reached more than 25,000 viewers worldwide. He later starred in San Francisco Opera’s innovative “drive-in” Barber of Seville and appeared in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s filmed Pagliacci.
A native of North Carolina, Meachem studied at Appalachian State University, the Eastman School of Music, and Yale University before joining the Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera. Together with his wife, he founded the Perfect Day Music Foundation in 2020, which empowers aspiring singers through education, financial assistance, and performance opportunities.
