SUMMARY:GOLDBERG VARIATIONS FOR TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Three extraordinary musicians—Jennifer Gilbert\, the concertmaster of the Orchestre National de Lyon; Alan Gilbert\, the renowned chief conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra who here shares his talents as a violist; and Paul Watkins\, the distinguished cellist of the recently retired Emerson String Quartet—take listeners into a stunning alternative sound world for one of the most beloved works in the chamber music repertoire: Bach’s Goldberg Variations\, performed here in an arrangement for string trio.  \nBACH Aria with 30 Variations (Goldberg Variations)\, BWV 988 (arr. SUMMARY:SCHUBERT & SHOSTAKOVICH
DESCRIPTION:Two charming works open this program\, which is then brought to a fiery conclusion with one of the most powerful works in the chamber music repertoire. Getting things started is the lyrical late-18th-century Flute Trio\, Op. 61\, No. 5\, by French Classical composer and flute virtuoso François Devienne\, who was known in his day as “The Mozart of the Flute.” Next\, violist Paul Neubauer and pianist Nicolas Namoradze play Schubert’s much-loved Arpeggione Sonata\, whose nickname is a nod to the six-stringed\, bowed guitar that was (briefly) popular in the early 19th century and that Schubert originally wrote the work for. To close out the evening\, Alan Gilbert\, on violin\, leads Festival musicians in Shostakovich’s stunning Piano Quintet\, which\, being very much a product of its time\, takes listeners on a wild emotional journey.  \n  \nDEVIENNE Trio for Flute\, Clarinet\, and Bassoon\, Op. 61\, No. 5  \nSCHUBERT Sonata in A Minor for Viola and Piano\, D. 821\, Arpeggione  \nSHOSTAKOVICH Piano Quintet in G Minor\, Op. 57  \n  \nApproximate length: 1 hour and 40 minutes \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicolas Namoradze\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alan Gilbert\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Harvey de Souza\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Neubauer\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Watkins\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bart Feller\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Todd Levy\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ted Soluri\nRead their bio

DESCRIPTION:This intimate program features two lovely duets\, including Falla’s folk-song-inspired Suite populaire espagnole—which evokes Spain’s rich musical and cultural landscape and here features cellist Paul Watkins and pianist Haochen Zhang—and one of Brahms’s final works: the F-minor Sonata for Viola and Piano\, a late masterpiece performed by Paul Neubauer and Zhang. The program also includes Dvořák’s elegant Terzetto\, a mix of mournful and fiery music that’s scored for the unusual combination of two violins and a viola.  \n  \nFALLA Suite populaire espagnole for Cello and Piano (arr. SUMMARY:BARTÓK & RACHMANINOFF
DESCRIPTION:This thrilling program centers on piano duets by Schubert\, Rachmaninoff\, and György Kurtág\, which are performed here by award-winning pianists Kirill Gerstein and Katia Skanavi. The duo is joined by New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Percussionist Daniel Druckman and Mike Truesdell for Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion\, a work that was wonderfully innovative (for its unusual instrumentation and wide range of influences) when Bartók premiered it alongside his pianist wife in 1938.  \n  \nSCHUBERT Variations on an Original Theme in A-flat Major\, D. 813  \nBARTÓK Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion\, Sz. 110  \nGYÖRGY KURTÁG Two Mussorgsky Transcriptions  \nRACHMANINOFF Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos\, Op. 45  \n  \nApproximate length: 2 hours  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Kirill Gerstein\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Katia Skanavi\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Daniel Druckman\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mike Truesdell\nRead their bio

SUMMARY:DOVER QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:The renowned Dover Quartet\, named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years\, makes its first appearance of the season on this two-work program\, which includes Mendelssohn’s last chamber music work—the passionate String Quartet in F Minor\, Op. 80\, which the composer wrote while consumed with grief over the sudden loss of his beloved sister Fanny and just two months before his own sudden death at the age of 38. The Dover also plays the less-well-known but also powerful String Quartet No. 4 by the 20th-century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz\, who saw her reputation grow after World War II. The quartet is at once forward-looking (a stance Bacewicz was firmly dedicated to) and folkloristic.  \n  \nBACEWICZ String Quartet No. 4  \nMENDELSSOHN String Quartet in F Minor\, Op. 80  \n \nApproximate length: 1 hour  \nGenerously sponsored by the Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum Memorial Fund \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dover Quartet\nRead their bio
