SUMMARY:BERWALD SEPTET
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating program begins with Julian Bliss (whose performances have been called “immaculate” by The Guardian) making his Festival debut in one of the best-known works for solo clarinet. After that\, it dives into two delightful\, lesser-known pieces: Prague-born Erwin Schulhoff’s early-20th-century Concertino for Flute\, Viola\, and Double Bass—which draws inspiration from an eclectic range of influences\, including Czech folk music—and 19th-century Swedish composer Franz Berwald’s charming and stirringly Romantic Septet in B-flat Major.  \n  \nSTRAVINSKY Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet (1919) \nSCHULHOFF Concertino for Flute\, Viola\, and Double Bass (1925) \nBERWALD Septet in B-flat Major (ca 1828)  \nApproximate length: 1 hour \nGenerously sponsored by the Edgar Foster Daniels Foundation in memory of Edgar Foster Daniels \n \n \n \n \n \n Insights: Program Notes with Marc Neikrug – July 22\, 12 PM\, BERWALD SEPTET\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Danbi Um\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Toby Appel\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Daniel Phillips\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicholas Canellakis\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Edgar Meyer\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tara Helen O’Connor\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Julian Bliss\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Peter Kolkay\nFestival DebutRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jennifer Montone\nRead their bio

SUMMARY:BRAHMS & DVOŘÁK
DESCRIPTION:This intimate program features two lovely duets\, including Falla’s folk-song-inspired Suite populaire espagnole—which evokes Spain’s rich musical and cultural landscape and here features cellist Paul Watkins and pianist Haochen Zhang—and one of Brahms’s final works: the F-minor Sonata for Viola and Piano\, a late masterpiece performed by Paul Neubauer and Zhang. The program also includes Dvořák’s elegant Terzetto\, a mix of mournful and fiery music that’s scored for the unusual combination of two violins and a viola.  \n  \nFALLA Suite populaire espagnole for Cello and Piano (arr. SUMMARY:LUCAS & IRINA MEACHEM RECITAL
DESCRIPTION:The husband-and-wife duo of Lucas Meachem (the Grammy Award–winning baritone who’s been hailed as a “rock star of opera” by Opera Pulse) and Irina Meachem (praised as “a gifted collaborative pianist” by Voce di Meche) present a program of American art songs that “draws from the voices of poets and composers who illuminate the enduring tension between struggle and hope\,” Irina wrote in a program note. “These songs\,” she continued\, “are reminders of where we’ve come from\, what we carry forward\, and how art continues to shape the way we endure\, dream\, and belong.”  \n  \nCOPLAND Selections from Old American Songs (1950\, 1952)  \nWEILL Four Walt Whitman Songs (1942/1947)  \nJAKE HEGGIE A Question of Light (2011) \n  \nApproximate length: 1 hour  \n Generously sponsored by the Edgar Foster Daniels Foundation in memory of Edgar Foster Daniels \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lucas Meachem\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Irina Meachem\nFestival DebutRead their bio

DESCRIPTION:Following their performances of Schubert’s song cycles Die schöne Müllerin on August 16 and Schwanengesang on August 17\, baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Simon Lepper mark their final appearance of the season with perhaps the pinnacle of the art-song repertoire: Schubert’s mournful and achingly beautiful Winterreise\, which the composer said he liked “more than any of my other songs.”   \n  \nSCHUBERT Winterreise\, D. 911 (1827)  \n  \nApproximate length: 1 hour and 20 minutes  \nGenerously sponsored by the Edgar Foster Daniels Foundation in memory of Edgar Foster Daniels \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Benjamin Appl\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Simon Lepper\nRead their bio
