SUMMARY:SCHUBERT & SHOSTAKOVICH
DESCRIPTION:Two charming works open this program\, which is then brought to a fiery conclusion with one of the most powerful works in the chamber music repertoire. Getting things started is the lyrical late-18th-century Flute Trio\, Op. 61\, No. 5\, by French Classical composer and flute virtuoso François Devienne\, who was known in his day as “The Mozart of the Flute.” Next\, violist Paul Neubauer and pianist Nicolas Namoradze play Schubert’s much-loved Arpeggione Sonata\, whose nickname is a nod to the six-stringed\, bowed guitar that was (briefly) popular in the early 19th century and that Schubert originally wrote the work for. To close out the evening\, Alan Gilbert\, on violin\, leads Festival musicians in Shostakovich’s stunning Piano Quintet\, which\, being very much a product of its time\, takes listeners on a wild emotional journey.  \n  \nDEVIENNE Trio for Flute\, Clarinet\, and Bassoon\, Op. 61\, No. 5 (c. 1795)  \nSCHUBERT Sonata in A Minor for Viola and Piano\, D. 821\, Arpeggione (1824)  \nSHOSTAKOVICH Piano Quintet in G Minor\, Op. 57 (1940)   \n  \nApproximate length: 1 hour and 40 minutes \nGenerously sponsored by Tom Udall and Jill Cooper \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicolas Namoradze\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alan Gilbert\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Harvey de Souza\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Neubauer\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Watkins\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bart Feller\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Danny Goldman \nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ted Soluri\nRead their bio

SUMMARY:BRAHMS & RAVEL

SUMMARY:ALL SCHUBERT
DESCRIPTION:In the first of their three appearances this season\, baritone Benjamin Appl—who was one of legendary German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s final students and who’s been called “the most promising of today’s up-and-coming song recitalists” by the Financial Times—and acclaimed pianist Simon Lepper perform a crown jewel of the piano-vocal repertoire: Schubert’s landmark song cycle Die schöne Müllerin. The program also includes Schubert’s final chamber work\, the monumental Cello Quintet\, which was completed two months before the composer died at age 31 but wasn’t publicly performed until more than two decades later.  \n  \nSCHUBERT Die schöne Müllerin\, D. 795 (1823)  \nSCHUBERT String Quintet in C Major\, D. 956 (1828)  \n  \nApproximate length: 2 hours  \nGenerously sponsored by Elaine Wang Meyerhoffer  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Benjamin Appl\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Simon Lepper\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n William Hagen\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Chad Hoopes\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Milena Pajaro van de Stadt\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Clive Greensmith\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Harriet Krijgh\nFestival debutRead their bio
