SUMMARY:SCHUBERT & SHOSTAKOVICH
DESCRIPTION:Two charming works open this program\, which is then brought to a fiery conclusion with one of the most powerful works in the chamber music repertoire. Getting things started is the lyrical late-18th-century Flute Trio\, Op. 61\, No. 5\, by French Classical composer and flute virtuoso François Devienne\, who was known in his day as “The Mozart of the Flute.” Next\, violist Paul Neubauer and pianist Nicolas Namoradze play Schubert’s much-loved Arpeggione Sonata\, whose nickname is a nod to the six-stringed\, bowed guitar that was (briefly) popular in the early 19th century and that Schubert originally wrote the work for. To close out the evening\, Alan Gilbert\, on violin\, leads Festival musicians in Shostakovich’s stunning Piano Quintet\, which\, being very much a product of its time\, takes listeners on a wild emotional journey.  \n  \nDEVIENNE Trio for Flute\, Clarinet\, and Bassoon\, Op. 61\, No. 5 (c. 1795)  \nSCHUBERT Sonata in A Minor for Viola and Piano\, D. 821\, Arpeggione (1824)  \nSHOSTAKOVICH Piano Quintet in G Minor\, Op. 57 (1940)  \n \nApproximate length: 1 hour and 40 minutes  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Insights: Program Notes with Marc Neikrug – August 3\, 6 PM\, SCHUBERT & SHOSTAKOVICH\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nicolas Namoradze\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alan Gilbert\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Harvey de Souza\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Neubauer\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul Watkins\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bart Feller\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Danny Goldman\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ted Soluri\nRead their bio

SUMMARY:BRAHMS & RAVEL
DESCRIPTION:David Shifrin and the Verona Quartet perform Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet\, one of the composer’s final works and one that’s often cited as his greatest piece of chamber music. The program also includes a gorgeous harp showpiece by Ravel—his Introduction and Allegro—and a new Festival-commissioned work for piano quartet by Elizabeth Ogonek\, who\, early in her acclaimed career\, was one of the participants in the Festival’s first-ever Young Composers String Quartet Project.  \n  \nRAVEL Introduction and Allegro (1905)  \nELIZABETH OGONEK Garlands for Piano Quartet (Festival Commission\, World Premiere) (2026) \nBRAHMS Clarinet Quintet in B Minor\, Op. 115 (1891) \n  \nApproximate length: 1 hour and 45 minutes  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Insights: Program Notes with Marc Neikrug – Aug 10\, 6 PM\, BRAHMS & RAVEL\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Subscribe\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Performed by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Orion Weiss\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jennifer Frautschi\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ida Kavafian\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Felix Fan\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Grace Browning\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bart Feller\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Laura Ardan\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n David Shifrin\nRead their bio \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Verona Quartet\nRead their bio
